The camera does not work on Windows 10

When the camera is not working in Windows 10, it may be that drivers are missing after the last update. It’s also possible that your antivirus is blocking the camera, your privacy settings don’t allow camera access for some apps, or there’s a problem with the app you want to use.

Before start

Before applying the solutions mentioned, do the following:

  • Check for updates. Select Start , then select Settings Updates and security Windows Update > Check for updates . If you see the View Optional Updates option , select it to see if updates are available for your camera. Allow the installation of any available updates, then restart your device when it’s ready.
  • Restart the computer. If the device has not been restarted since the camera stopped working, do so. Select Start , and then select Power  Restart . Waking a device from sleep mode is not the same as restarting it.
  • Test the camera with the Camera app. Select Start , and then select Camera from the list of apps. If prompted to allow Camera access, select Yes. If the camera works in the Camera app, the problem may be with the app you want to use.

    Open the Camera app

If your camera still doesn’t work, here are some other solutions you can try. For best results, try possible solutions in the order presented.

Check the switch or camera button on your device

Some laptops and handheld devices have a switch or button to turn the camera on or off. When the camera is turned off, your device will not recognize the installed camera. If your computer has a switch or button, make sure it is in the correct position before using the camera.

Checking the settings

Granting permissions to applications

If you’ve recently updated Windows 10 settings, you may need to grant apps permission to use the camera. In newer versions of Windows 10, some applications do not have access to the camera by default.

To allow your device to access the camera, select Startand then select Settings  >  Privacy >  Camera . Under Allow camera access on this device , if Camera Access for this device is off, select Change and turn on Camera Access for this device .

Allow access to the camera on this device

Note:  If camera access on your device is disabled and Change cannot be selected , you will need device administrator permissions to enable camera access.

Before any application can access your camera, make sure that Camera access for the application is enabled in your user account. Make sure Allow applications to access the camera is turned on.

After allowing access to the camera, go to Specify which apps from the Microsoft Store can access your camera and enable camera access for the relevant apps. Only apps installed from the Microsoft Store will appear in this list.

If you installed an application from the Internet, disk, USB flash drive, or the system administrator installed an application, it might not be an application from the Microsoft Store. To check this, go to Allow desktop apps to access the camera and make sure it’s turned on. Many videoconferencing apps, such as Microsoft Teams, are classic apps and require this setting to be turned on.

To learn how to configure camera privacy settings in Windows 10, go to the Windows Community page (in English).

Checking antivirus software

In the antivirus settings, look for settings that block the camera or permissions to use the camera. Visit the antivirus software manufacturer’s website for assistance.

Checking hardware drivers

Try a different USB port and scan for hardware changes

If you are using an external camera, try connecting it to a different USB port on your device first. If this does not fix the problem or your camera is built into your device, try the following:

  1. Select Start, enter device manager , and then select it from the search results.
  2. Find your camera under Cameras , Imaging Devices , or Sound, video and game controllers .
  3. If you can’t find your camera, select the Action menu , and then select Scan for hardware changes .
  4. Wait for the scan to complete and the updated drivers are installed, restart your device, and then try opening the Camera app again.
  5. If these steps do not resolve the issue, continue to the next steps.

Check for incompatible camera drivers

Some older cameras designed for older devices are not compatible with Windows 10. Here’s how to check if your camera is compatible:

  1. In Device Manager, look for your camera under Cameras , Imaging Devices , or Sound, video and game controllers .
  2. Press and hold (or right-click) the camera name and select Properties .
  3. Select the Driver tab , select the Driver Details button , and look for a file name that includes stream.sys . If you find it, then your camera was developed before Windows 7 and you need to replace it with a newer camera.
  4. If you do not find a file name that includes stream.sys , continue to the next steps.

Restore the camera driver

If the camera stopped working after updating, please try the following:

  1. In Device Manager, press and hold (or right-click) the camera name, and then select Properties .
  2. Select the Driver tab , select Roll Back Driver , and then select Yes . (Some drivers do not provide this option. If the driver does not have the Roll Back Driver option available , go to the next remedial step).
  3. After the restore is complete, restart your device then try to open the Camera app again.
  4. If recovery did not work or is not available continue to the next steps.

Uninstall the camera driver and scan for hardware changes

  1. In Device Manager, press and hold (or right-click) the camera name, and then select Properties .
  2. Select the Driver tab  , and then select  Uninstall Device . Select the Delete  the driver software for this device check box , and then select OK .
  3. In Device Manager , in the Actions menu, select Scan for hardware changes .
  4. Wait for the scan to complete and updated drivers are reinstalled, restart the computer, and then try to open the Camera app again.

Note:  If your camera still doesn’t work, try looking for help on the manufacturer’s website.
